I'm going to keep on looking as well, but I don't really want to order anything online unless I know it's nice, and I've already been to the bookshops near me with decent English sections, hehe. BOO! I might have to search when I'm in the UK this Christmas.Jimjamjennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02249933703532348607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163886247083346971.post-61678369274791047492014-11-25T17:27:26.526+09:002014-11-25T17:27:26.526+09:00I know the random stories were very Dickensian, bu...I know the random stories were very Dickensian, but I don't really like Dickens that much (I'm obviously a masochist as this is my second Dickens readalong, hehe), so yeah. They don't do anything for me.

Aww I am seriously the only person who liked the first chapter, aren't I? What's wrong with me?Jimjamjennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02249933703532348607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163886247083346971.post-85947846015880511322014-11-25T16:24:53.019+09:002014-11-25T16:24:53.019+09:00I was pleasantly surprised by how funny and sarcas...I was pleasantly surprised by how funny and sarcastic Dickens is with the characterization of the club members :)
I'm glad I'm in this readalong with you - I'm also looking for a pretty printed version for my collection, so I'll let you know if I find anything. Currently reading the kindle version.Etudesquehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13106938419901219249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163886247083346971.post-21529678132242832014-11-22T06:11:48.950+09:002014-11-22T06:11:48.950+09:00Gawd, I loved this section! Actually, no, I read the very first chapter and was like, "Jeez, I hope it isn't all going to be this boring" - but then it got funny and it was aaaaaall okay. I actually really liked the darker stories mixed in with the farcical shenanigans. I don't normally like it when authors throw in random stuff like that, but the anecdotes and stories were very... traditionally Dickensian? It was like he was honing his future writing style while still enjoying tormenting the Pickwickians on the side. :)Elliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07246472269477492583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163886247083346971.post-51152527157589294252014-11-21T10:55:46.981+09:002014-11-21T10:55:46.981+09:00It is possible! Or he was just doing the typical Dickens thing of trying to increase the word count, hehe.

The one who was going sideways on his horse, right? Hehe, yeah he's likeable too! I hope that there are sections that focus more on him and Snodgrass, because all I can remember about Snodgrass so far is that he's a poet.

Maybe I should have got that free one then! Although I only paid like a pound for the one that I got, so I'm not feeling too bad about paying for it. I think I might actually prefer reading it on an e-reader as you avoid the problem of minuscule text that I've had with printed classics before, plus I can highlight things easily (I can't bring myself to write in actual books). I still want a pretty copy for my shelves though. If I'm going to struggle through Dickens then at least people who see my bookshelves should know about it, dammit! Hehe.Jimjamjennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02249933703532348607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163886247083346971.post-76747442782542016552014-11-21T06:21:51.182+09:002014-11-21T06:21:51.182+09:00Oh! I agree though - they broke up the flow of the story for me and I really wasn't all that interested. I have a sneaking suspicion that they were story ideas he thought were too 'big' to fit into the story itself (it was his firstpublished work, after all) so just shoved them in any old how. I groan every time I see one :p

I quite like Mr... Winkle? as well. The one who keeps saying he can do things when he very clearly can't.

I have one of the free e-books (the gutenberg version) and haven't had a problem with it at all!Hanna @ Booking in Heelshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17705048655467252248noreply@blogger.com
